From visual artists and writers to historians and curators, Surf Point in York is redefining the artist residency experience while fostering creative exploration, community engagement, and a deep connection to Maine’s coastal landscape
In April 2021, when South Berwick–based artist Carly Glovinski arrived for her residency at Surf Point in York, she didn’t have a specific project she intended to pursue there. “On the second day, I was roaming around this gorgeous property and came upon an overgrown rock wall terrace,” she recalls. “I heard the house had been taken down, but it had this feeling of presence and a story I wanted to dig deeper into.”
The foundation was from Wild Knoll, a 1905 cottage that had been on the property when artist Beverly Hallam and philanthropist Mary-Leigh Smart purchased the oceanside lot that would eventually become Surf Point. The women had rented it to the writer May Sarton, who lived there until her death in 1995. Sarton had written her book The House by the Sea at Wild Knoll, which Glovinski devoured. It “revealed her as an avid gardener,” she says of Sarton, who Glovinski has come to think of as “the first artist in residence at Surf Point.”
